I dont really if you choose the runlevel, but you can definitely go into single
user mode. And ofcourse after that you can telinit to the required runlevel.
To do that you will have to edit the kernel parameters. In the grub menu
hilight the GNU/Linux menu item and press 'e' to edit. Then in the kernel
parameters add the word 'single'. Quit from edit mode and press 'b' to boot.
