A few days back, the core team had a meeting where they discussed a few issues
regarding the GLUG-T. One of the issues brought up was distribution of
certificates to people who have worked on GLUG-T projects.(Workshops for
example.) It seems that as people gear up for their placements, they are facing
problems with others making false claims in Biods.
I was not there during the meet, so I would like to express my opinion on the
issue.
The main problem with proponents of the certification does not seem to be about
crediting the people who had worked. But to prevent others from making false
claims about having worked on these projects.
While that is a completely valid and reasonable thing, I don't think issueing
certificates would help the situation. People make false claims about a hell
lot of things. There are a lot of people around who plagiarize projects. With
the advent of free software this problem is also increasing. Such people belong
to a lower life form and should be best ignored by people like us.
As a matter of fact certificates don't really help much. Not many
companies/interviewers bother to look into the authenticity of the information
provided.
We could better spend our free time working on other free software projects
than printing certificates.
The best thing to do would be to list all people who have worked on projects in
the appropriate projects page on our website. And that has already been done.
(Except for the workshop I guess.) So even if a company does want to verify the
authenticity of the information provided you could point them to our website.
So please bite it. I know how much it pains when somebody claims credit for the
work you did. I have experienced that in the past, myself. But try look at the
greater goal of what you have acheived, your contribution to the free software
movement, and your contribution to build a better world. And the satisfaction
and happiness that arises out of that is more important.
