[glug-t] A few minutes late.

Dear GLUG-Tians,
The GLUG-T meeting on 12th of october 2003, was held at the A2 hall in
the NIT-Trichy campus. The meeting was delayed as we were waiting for people
to arrive. It started by 10.00am.The topics to be discussed for this meeting
were (i) FIFO's and pipes & (ii) Network Programming.
This time for a change NIT-T could Vijaykumar started the proceedings
by presenting the case on FIFO's and pipes.IPC's were introduced as a method of
communication in the *NIX world. He started by recollecting that we
were all familiar with |'s [pipe's] as we use it in the shell. Then went on to
show how useful they could be.Vijay talked about a few system call's after
explaining what they were;of interest was dup,dup2,fork,execve etc. Then he
showed various slides for explaining half duplex, full duplex and simplex
commmunication. The session was very useful for anyone who would've been starry
eyed with acronyms and the alphabet soup called IPC's.Vijay did not have the
luxury of time to complete his FIFO's at his pace.He hurried through the
presentation, but not before he did justice to FIFO's.FIFO's he said were a
simple way of IPC's between foreign applications.FIFO's were also called "named
pipes".A few questions on FIFO's were raised and aptly answered with the
computer at hand.
Next was our friend Manickam's turn to don the mantle. He was dejected as
hios presentation coulnt be "transported" from the NIT-T LAN to the computer
system in A2 hall.So the crestfallen Manickam,he was began his presentation,
regretting for the mishap [actually the not-happened thing].Manickam talked
about the various layers in the Network stack of the OSI & DARPA model. He went
on to say how networking was very useful for many things we overlook as
everyday. Then went on to show a simple echo server program. Many many queries
were raised about sockets and networks, clients and servers. They were more than
answered by the Gurus's present at the meeting. Many points of agreement were
disputed and disproved.A lively discussion and argument followed on the networks
lectures.Little & Big endians were equally bewildering with the jargon
Mr.Manickam was throwing at all of us.And the disucssion was prematurely closed,
as had to be due to time constraints for a topic as broad as Networking.
Next Vijaykumar disucssed some issuses in the news.He elucidated about
the
SCO/IBM tussle, and the stand of FSF.Finally we talked about the next meeting,
and agreed that it would be decided on the mailing lists.Topics for the next
meeting were to be decided later,I guess.
And we said Bye,but not before Vijay admonished the attitude of some of the
volunteers for their lethargy in distributing the books on "Free Software & Free
Society".

Cheers
Muthu.

Its more certainly GNU.
