No, it's one-way from the real game board to the edit board. Synchronize
updates the edit board with the current real game position, which probably
makes not so much sense for GNU GO playing (but for IGS, see below).
However, if you are playing GNU Go, you can save from the edit board and
then resume playing this SGF file.

The edit board was designed for the IGS client, not GNU Go. Actually, the
whole GNU Go support was just some sideeffect I did when I was bored with
the IGS client part. gGo design is mainly made for the IGS client and the
SGF editor. And on IGS games the one-way makes sense. When you
observe an IGS game and you don't understand a move and edit the game
locally to try some variations for yourself, then Synchronize is used to
update your edit board again with the ongoing game which is now probably
some moves later than when you started with your editing, so Synchronize is
quite useful here and saves you reopening another edit board again. Of
course, with GNU Go there is no game ongoing while you are editing, so the
Synchronize is not too useful. But you could use it to cheat a little when
playing GNU Go, like trying a move and follow-ups before playing it in the
real game. This is not possible anymore with own IGS games, I removed it
there with the latest release, but I guess it does no harm when playing a
computer.
