[ggo-discussion] barking up a tree

Hi all,

An aid to navigate game positions in a
tree-representation is a rather complicated piece of
user-interface to build.

As Peter will not be able to get it off of his to-do
list in a snap, we might help by in the meantime
discussing the looks we would like and maybe even the
expected behavior of it. (Peter, please correct me if
I'm wrong)

Differing opinions are welcome, I'll try to state
mine.

First of all: the underlying structure is actually a
maze. Think of tewari and multiple fuseki leading to
the same board position.
So there should be a way of visualizing a join, too.
An arrow would do.

I don't really like the Jago tree display.
One good thing: it is small - maybe too small.

The CGoban tree-list looks good but has some flaws.
Good things:
- it is integrated with the editing functionality
- the board positions are represented with
move-numbers in alternating B and W (as stones, which
furthers the association with moves)

Bad:
- The nodes are big.

- You can't see in the display where there are
comments to the board positions. A visual clue would
help - a pencil or a comic book-balloon.

In Cgoban and Jago all nodes are equally sized (and in
CGoban too big). I think labeled positions, branching
points and the positions just after branches
(preferably with a label, A, B etc if those are
present in the branch) should be represented
relatively big, while long (single line) strings could
consist of (much) smaller nodes. That would make it
easier to make big jumps, or approach the next
branch/join.

Just my 2 Eurocents.

Keep up the good work!
