Hello Peter,
Thanks for the tree display. It is actually more than a good start.
Since you requested comments, I thought I can mention my first impressions
(so please take them for whatever they are worth):
The main issue that I have is displaying the first branch so far from the
main. Most commented games have many very short branches. I found myself
having to scroll down to find many of the earlier branches. Unfortunately,
the tree allocates the vertical space for the branch and does not reuse it
after the branch stops. That also results in a lot of empty space on the
tree display (I understand that is hard to change). I find it easier if the
earlier branches were close to the body and the later branches further away.
Also making the tree more compact can make it easier to see the structure.
One possible idea is not to expand the whole tree immediately but have the
nodes with branches displayed differently and expand the branch only when
requested (maby with a right mouse click).
I do not find the move numbers that useful. The main use I have for the tree
is to read commented games or teaching games. If the main variation stops
and the game continues in a second variation, the numbering restarts at 1. I
definitely prefer move locations instead (such as c12, r3, etc.) or if that
is difficult eliminate the number and make the circle smaller (or even a
bullit) and the tree more compact.
Finally, are we supposed to hear sound when traversing the tree?
Again thanks a lot for a great job :) and I hope these comments are useful.
Regards...
Zee

Cheers,
the new glGo version 0.0.8.2 adds the tree which was mentioned in
previous mailings. I'm not yet fully pleased with it, but it's a good
start. Comments and feedback are appreciated.
Next gGo release or the one after will have the same tree, too. I have
not started porting it to Java yet, but it shouldn't be too much work as
I have some already working code now.
I thought a bit more about the SmartGo/MultiGo like tree (well, not
really a tree) in Windows-explorer style. Actually I think one could
have both, the latter embedded in the sidebar with some compact
information, and the first in an own window which could be opened
additionally or not, depending on personal taste.
Peter
