To clear this one up, yes, we need 24-mean-solar-hour snapshots, not 23h 56m snapshots to obtain the yearly rotation effect.

Look at the larger of the two panels in the attachment. You will see that all the sidereal period points are looking at a fixed position in the sky thus no change will be observed.
Also, note where the observer would be standing if he had his back to the axis of (ecliptic) revolution -- facing outwards. This only happens -- as Philip S has stated -- at midnight.
