We did the Cessna type tour, and even from that elevation the sight of
the glaciers below was pretty incredible. We got pretty lucky and had a
mostly clear flight....though the weather was rapidly moving in towards
the end of our flight.
We didn't get any farther north than Denali Nat'l Park, but put about
2500 miles on the car in a little under 2 weeks. Flew into Anchorage,
drove up to Denali (after stopping in Talkeetna for the annual 'Moose
Dropping Festival' <g>), then across the Denali Hwy (another long gravel
'highway'), down the road that pretty much runs along the pipeline to
the McCarthy/Wrangell-St. Elias area, a brief stop in Valdez and then
back over to the Kenai Peninsula and across/around most of that.
All in all, we put about 2500 miles on the car in just under 2 weeks and
really only saw about the southeast quarter of the state. I think you'd
have to drive the complete perimeter of the state of MO *twice* to rack
up that many miles. The place is just H-U-G-E....even to a Texan I would
guess.
