Hey! I'm a SLAGA cacher too! Anyway, like Myotis said, the Columbia picnic
was a good old time. In total, I think there were nine different cachers and
cache teams that attended, for a total of about 15 people. It was the
majority of the most active cachers in Columbia, plus we had representatives
from both ends of Missouri - SLAGA's own Myotis from St. Louis, and P-3 Nav
drove in from Kansas City. It was a lot smaller of an affair than the St.
Louis picnic, of course, but it was a pretty good turnout for the first
local gathering (and more than what I'd expected).
There weren't any formal activities planned for the day, so we mostly just
sat around and traded war stories and gave the out-of-towners some tips on
the local caches. Myotis suggested we should hide a picnic cache, so I
scrounged up a tupperware and logbook out of my car and we passed it around
to fill with trinkets. The whole gang headed into the park en masse to place
it, and in the process we ended up resolving the age-old question, "how many
geocachers does it take to hide a cache?" (See attached photo.) At least we
good a pretty good fix on the coordinates! The decoying on the cache is
extensive, to say the least, and woe to those who left the picnic early when
they come back to try and find it. (The cache page is at
<http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=40423>)
All in all it was a nice event, and a good way to meet a lot of the people
that have helped geocaching start to take off in this neck of the woods.
Thanks to those who came, and those who tried to come, and those who thought
about coming but didn't. ;) And for the rest of you, there's still plenty of
brand-new caches out here waiting to be found...

I was the lone SLAGA cacher at the picnic. But it was lots of fun. I did
a
22-cache geobinge. I would have got 24 and made 300 today except for
problems with the new Jefferson City caches. I found the one that was
about
200 feet off, but the one that has coordinates over a mile off threw me. I
spent over an hour trying to find it but the clue was "none needed."
Camped both nights. Rain stopped Friday night long enough to get my tent
up. Then it rained through the night until it was time to get up for a
long
day of caching. Weather great all weekend, only got down to 31 last night.
There are lots of very nice caches in Columbia. (Particularly south of the
city.) Lots of them are lots of walking and climbing. I know I walked at
least 20 miles this weekend. I'm sore and tired. Bruce, I don't know how
you do it!
Thanks to all you down in Columbia.
