Welcome to Geocaching, and you have already found the one of the best sources
of information about Geocaching (this mailing list). I would also encourage
you to dig through the archives of this list as there is quite a lot of helpful
information there too.
I too highly recommend a walking stick of some sorts for poking, prodding,
vaulting a creek, etc.
If you have questions, you can see how helpful people are. Do look for a group
hunt and you will learn many new tricks.
