- We started noticing more birds like that in our North County area after the '93 flood. Eventually the off course eagle wasn't unusual. Now, being in Effingham, IL, eagles are starting to nest at the lake a bit west of town (the town's water supply). Really! You know, the other wildlife I'm seeing a lot more of here lately is larger birds of prey. We've always had the smaller Cooper's hawks around, now I'm starting to see red-shouldered hawks circling, and sometimes in my trees in the back yard. I sometimes wonder if the new park area is drawing a bit more wildlife. On Apr 23, 2012, at 11:08 PM, Bernie Ver Hey wrote: I saw one just past Lake St. Louis the other morning. Apropos of nothing, I saw a coyote on my way home from work tonight. He walked in front of me on the exit from 370 to Spencer and stopped about 20 feet from the pavement. There was no traffic so I stopped, too, and he just stared straight at me. The biggest coyote I have ever seen in the "wild" Soooooo cool. I instantly heard Johnny Cash's voice in my head.
