What is the real purpose of geocaching? Is it to find a hidden box with some
trinkets? Or, is it to encourage people to go to a location that they
normally wouldn't go? Or see something that they normally wouldn't see?
I am a little undecided about virtuals, but I certainly see a purpose in
certain instances. Such as, when it would be in a location that nothing
could be hidden discreetly, but yet we would like to encourage visits to
the locale. I don't think a cache should be a virtual just because the cache
could not be maintained by the placer because they live too far away.
Personally, finding the treasure is taking that hike in the woods, seeing a
great vista, or visiting a location that I learn some bit of history or
trivia by going to and observing.
When I first started geocaching, finding the cache box, examining the
"treasures", and making the swap was a great thrill. Now I seldom trade
trinkets. I just sign the log and write TNLN. But I think "newbies" and
surely the kids really enjoy that element.
I do enjoy virtuals when the take me to a place I would not have gone
otherwise, so I would not recommend that they all be banned. But, if there
is the capability of placing a real cache, then that should prevail.
Just my ramblings. John
