[GeoStL] Re: Outdoor Expo

Glad to hear things went well. I had to work today so I wasn't able to make
it. This event fell at the perfect time. I've been trying to get a couple
caches approved for Conservation Areas and the infamous Nate Forbes rejected my
special use permit application that he told me I could fill out and he'd
consider it. Well, if an area manager rejects your application, you can send
in a reconsideration form to the regional coordination team to be reviewed.
The team in this area is located at Busch Wildlife Area and they're meeting on
Aug. 3. When I wrote my letter to them, I mentioned SLAGA being at the Expo
and hope that the regional coordination team members got some exposure to
geocaching today.

Well the Outdoor Expo at Busch Wildlife Area today was a huge success! We had
a great turn out; at 3:00 they told us there had been 1066 people come through.
We had one man sign up for SLAGA while we where there and several more very
interested. Some people had heard of Geocaching but never knew where to find
out about it.

We hid three caches for the visitors to find; a few of them went and found
them. Otherwise they asked a lot of questions about Geocaching, SLAGA and how
to use their GPS units. After the caches had been hidden one of the staff
members from the shooting range came over and told us where we need to stay out
of because they where going to be shooting. After they started shooting we
decided one of the caches was way to close to the range. After some persuasive
talking I talked Gold Retriever into going with me to move the cache. Luckily
we both survived without any lead pellets hitting us.

We did find time to walk around and check out the other exhibits. I enjoyed
watching Strider and Sarah throw the "arrows" (I forgot what it was called).
They both did pretty well at it, but I think they are going to keep caching.

We have been invited to set up a booth at their National Hunting and Fishing
Day expo at Busch Wildlife Area. The problem is it will be the same day as the
SLAGA fall picnic. It would be really nice if we could set up a booth. If there
are some members that will not be attending the picnic and would like to
volunteer to set it up please e-mail me off-list. They where really happy to
have us there and I think we need to keep this good relationship going! I have
the registration form we need to send in if we can get some volunteers to set
this up. All that is needed is someone to take charge and recruit other people
to help. The day of the event you would need to hide about three temporary
caches within 200 feet of the booth, hand out brochures and answer questions.
You would need to locate an awning to set up because there isn't much shade; we
had full sun today so it was really nice to have the awning.

Last but not least a great big THANK YOU to all of those that came out and
helped today. Because of members like you SLAGA is what it is today.

  Thanks
