I took a group of scouts geocaching in conjunction with a required rank
advancement hike. We found a knife in one of those caches, and I took
it. While I let small groups in so that each could "find" the cache, I
supervised the find of each group for just such a reason. I removed the
knife and told the boys that it was among the unacceptable cache items
and they should never leave such items in a cache. I took the knife.
While that is the way it should be, in this case, there was one boy who
did not have a knife. I gave it to his parents and let them decide if he
should have it or not. He had earned his Totin' Chit, so as a scout he
was allowed to carry the knife, but it is really up to the parents to
allow ownership and use of the knife, not some unthinking cacher.
