Just for closure, here's an update on the roommate's condition.

He was discharged from the hospital last Friday with a PICC line (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PICC_line ) installed. He has to flush the line 
and infuse antivirals twice daily.
He is feeling much better and is as ornery as ever. If all goes well, the PICC 
comes out Tuesday. Complete recovery is imminent.
