If you don't find a metal detector, you could use a trick from black water searching:
- get a long rope
- anchor one end
- use the rope as a guide and walk back and forth in a large arc
- each time you let out about 3 foot, then go back the other way
- that keeps you from missing an area
- works good when you lose something on a float trip too
