[GeoStL] Re: NGR: A question about Camping

-
Tough call. I would say that if they were in college and maybe experienced
in the world, I would let them go, or if there were more of them. But only
two, and probably still in high school, or just graduating. I don't know.
Atthat age, it reminds me of the girl that disappeared in the Carribean.
Surethat doesn't happen every day, and maybe she was not cautious enough,
butthat is exactly what I might be afraid of. An incident can be avoided if
you are experienced enough and therefore cautious enough. But at that age, I
don't know, and I especially don't know those kids. Even if they are good
kids, it may be their goodness that may make them vulnerable.
At that age, that first year of college can make a huge experience
difference. If it were my daughter, I think I would err on the side of
caution, and nix the trip. I may be overly cautious, but my daughter is now
29, and I only worry marginally less. Dads can be so overly protective, and
their little girls are still that no matter how old they get.

There you go, you had to make me think that my daughter is going to be
thirty-something soon. Do you know how old that makes me feel after just
getting back from a boy scout camp out with my son? Especially since we made
a 6.5 mile caching walk with the troop so some of the boys could get their 5
mile hike requirement out of the way? I am sore and cranky. I was already
feeling old, now I am on the edge of feeling ancient!!!

But the troop snagged 6 caches along the way, and they were all well behaved
and enthusiastic about it. OK. I am better now. You can call off the guys
with the white jackets.

Subject: [GeoStL] NGR: A question about Camping - My hubby and I are having
a"discussion". My daughter and her best friend are thinking of going on a
camping trip this summer. Not too far away, probably some state park. It is
to be a subsitute for the (IMO) insane senior class trip to Cancun. Hubby
thinks that it is unsafe for 2 girls (18 and 17) to camp by themselves. He
thinks there are a lot of people drinking and misbehaving in campgrounds
during the summer. I am sure he is also worried about their vulnerability to
men in the campgrounds. Gotta admit, that worries me a bit as well, but I
figure in a crowded campground all they have to do is let out a big yell to
get people's attention. Both girls are pretty level headed and love the
outdoors, so I'm not too worried about them getting themselves into trouble.
A little worried, yes, just not TOO worried. I don't get to camp much, so I
told him I would put the question to the experts. Sooo, what do you all
think? And if you think its OK, do you have any recommendations about good
places for them to go? **************************************** For List
