[GeoStL] Re: NGR: A question about Camping

-
I could be prejudiced on this one because my crazy parents let ME go with a
friend, her brother and his friend on a two week car (a manual Chevette)
trip to Colorado and back between my junior and senior year in high school.
Of course that was 20(something) years ago and things were a tad bit
different then. BUT.. it was a trip of a lifetime; regrettably
absolutely nothing bad, evil or even slightly scandalous occurred and I
have some great memories.

However, I would hardly qualify as a camping expert. But I do own an 8 year
old and my best friend's daughter is 16 and that's been an interesting
trip in itself. I say let them go. I'll bet they have cell phones; both
can drive and I'll bet they are levelheaded. If they are "brave" enough to
want to try this I'd let them go for it.

You could make a scouting trip or two out to the parks and see what looks
good. Find a couple of parks that you and your hubby are most comfortable
with and then limit them to those choices (heck, they can camp in our farm
field for free if they'd like, others have done it, but I'll be some of the
"attraction" is being around the other campers and knowing they are on their
own.)

For their first time out I think I'd avoid the private "party grounds"
that cater to floaters and stick with a state park where rules may be more
likely to be enforced. Hmmmm.can they even rent a state park space on
their own being 17 and 18? Don't most State Park campgrounds have
campground hosts? If you do a previsit hunt the hosts out and ask them what
they think about two young women camping alone in "their" park. Get the
host's names and number; perhaps they would keep an extra eye on the girls.
You wouldn't have to tell your daughter you're doing this :+) .

Isn't it likely that no one would even figure out that they were alone?
Timing could play a part. We tend to go places midweek in early June and
late August and usually have everything to ourselves. But that might cut
down on some of the "fun" of it for them.

Should we count you in on the SLAGA ChickCachers Roadtrip?

Nancy
