Most def can do the combined wired/wireless thing. I had a Cable/DSL =
router
with just wired ethernet capabilities up and running long before WiFi =
became
economically feasible (for me anyway). Still have that same DSL router =
in
line and a wireless access point (WAP) connected (via Ethernet) to it. =
My
primary desktop is hardwired to that DSL router, and I use the WAP to
connect 2 other pieces of h/w into my little network and out to the
Internet.....a 2nd desktop in another room, and an iPAQ pda.

Were I building the network from scratch today, I would purchase one of =
the
newer DSL/WAP combo routers (pick your poison from any number of good =
brands
including, but not limited to, Linksys & NetGear for the avg home
networker). And depending on what type and location of your h/w, you =
*may*
want to still hardwire the primary machine to it (assuming it's a =
desktop
and is set up near the incoming phone/DSL line), and then use the =
wireless
access for any other h/w you wish to include on the network. Obviously, =
if
all your h/w is of the notebook variety, then you may want to use the
wireless capabilities for all the machines.

Linksys actually has some fairly decent tutorials on how to set up small
home networks...or they used to, haven't been by there in a while. If =
not
there, you could also try www.practicallynetworked.com.
