That is a Puffball. They are edible if there are no dark spots in the middle
of it yet. They taste like chicken.
(just kidding) They taste like domestic mushrooms that you buy in the
produce department.

I went hiking in the woods today since it was a perfect fall day and my GPS
is in the shop. I came across this huge "something" in the woods. I thought
maybe someone could tell me what it was, should I have touched it and it's
too late now, or what. It was growing in a small flat area out of the
ground. And no, it's not Styrofoam!.
