That looks like a puff ball (type of mushroom/fungus). I have seen
several big ones this year, most I have seen have been brown. Once they
turn brown they release spores that almost looks like dust. When they are
still white they have not dried enough to release their spores.

I went hiking in the woods today since it was a perfect fall day and my
GPS is in the shop. I came across this huge "something" in the woods. I
thought maybe someone could tell me what it was, should I have touched it
and it's too late now, or what. It was growing in a small flat area out of
the ground. And no, it's not Styrofoam!.
