[GeoStL] Re: Low cache count

People should remember that cache ratings can be all over the place. What
one person may consider a 4 someone else may consider a 2. On the
Evansville trip we did 3 terrain with no problems. I thought they were
overrated. If we had not included 3 terrain, we would have walked past the
3 terrain caches on the way to the ones on the same ISU trail only rated
2.5. On that trail there was also a 4/2.5 that was next to the trail and
took 30 seconds to find.

When you have good topo maps (like my free Garmin ones) and know how to read
them, they can be better at judging the cache terrain than the rating. They
can also help in figuring out the way to get to the cache.

I think the key to efficiency in another city is a laptop. Trying to figure
things out with just the GPS is not easy. With the laptop and Street Atlas
(some like Streets and Trips), it is real easy to see where the caches are,
which ones to avoid, and a good order to do them. The problem with the GPS
is you don't get the big picture the laptop provides. With the laptop you
can also bring up the offline cache page with a click. That really helps.
A good example was on the Evansville Trip. When Jeff was picking out the
next cache just with his GPS, after John would click on the cache page, we
would radio them to abort as there were several DNFs than made it look like
the cache was gone.

Some people like using Street and Trips to plot a route. I don't like that
as it takes you to the closest spot which is not always the right starting
point. I just like to look at it and figure the next cache.
