Do you also have an "older" furnace? Ours is right at 20 years old and
worked with the biggest inverter from Home Depot. However it wasn't enough
to start newer furnaces (within the last 5-10 years) which need more amps to
start. We also found that while we could jump the furnace, there wasn't
enough power to run a small ceramic heater. Not sure if this will work
during the summer for the air -- last summer the typical take-along inverter
ran a couple of fans; portable DVD player; a couple of lights and of course
all the computer needs.
We're going to find out today if this it works on an electric well pump as
my parents are still out south of Owensville/north of Cuba and have about
depleted their hot water and reserve tank. My mom has discovered that she
can fry bologna and boil water on their whole-house wood-burning stove. Sure
would be nice to have Jim's solar power alternative at a time like this for
them.
And for people plugging their generators into their house, don't forget that
you have to disconnect from the main power line or you could send power into
that line and injure someone.
Also, some of my best advice is to PLEASE people without doors from your
house into your garage, know how to get into your garages when the power
goes out. And then, REMEMBER how that is done from outage to outage. Tom
(that would be the husband) could have had a substantial second income
charging people for either getting into theirs and we not only don't have a
garage door opener, but don't have room in the garage to park a car anyway.
