There, however, are issues and limitations with using the Custom POI file
for caching.
1) The find nearest geocache function only works for geocaches as a
waypoint. It will not work using custom POIs. It also will not save a find
custom POI to your calendar record of the geocaches you have found. (You
can get around this by saving the custom POI as a waypoint and then finding
it.)
2) Custom POIs will only display on the map 300 foot zoom and below. You
can have the waypoints display as high as you want.
Custom POIs have a big advantage over waypoints for caching. They will hold
many more letters than a waypoint. Most of the time, the hint will fit in a
custom POI and it will not fit in a waypoint.
The best solution is to load the waypoints and custom POIs. It is simple to
do with GSAK and a macro (I can share the macros). I will use the find
geocache function when looking for the cache. If I need to see the hint, I
will select find custom POI and look at the hint, then select cancel and
then the GPS is still on find the cache. It is much easier to look at the
hint this way than to look it up on my PDA or laptop. Since you can have as
many custom POIs as you want (when I went to WA and OR, I had about 3,500
caches on my gps as custom POIs), you always have them all if there is an
issue with you loading them as a waypoint.
