Premethrin.

It's the chemical they use to shampoo lice out of hair.  It's available in a 
spray form that you apply directly to your clothing.  Let it dry.  It will KILL 
the ticks as they land on your clothing.  Use that in combination with your 
DEET.

When I've gone into heavily wooded areas using this combination, I've never had 
problems.  The chemical stays on the clothing for up to two weeks and two 
washings.

It's available under the brand name "Sawyers" and can be found at Galyans 
(sp?), Sports Authority, Sportmart and Walmart.
