I've had the same problem with my Garmin. I just assumed it was because I
was under trees or not walking fast enough, ;-) I now carry a magnetic
compass just in case. Maybe its not me. Maybe it is my GPS. Thanks.
Post what you find out.

hmmm .. interesting. I don't know that we've paid attention to that.
There's something like a off road/follow road setting that will make a bit
of difference but I know we've not paid attention to the compass feature.
Wonder how it would it get turned off. To me that would still be a "Garmin
needs to fix this issue".
We do know about the moving across great distances and recalibrating.
But what we see is while in use. Arrow points up and to the right (looks
like Northeast) 150, 100, 90, 50. As you look for a spot to head into the
woods or cross the street and pass up where you think the last 50 feet
should be to the cache it continues to point northeast. Now it's still point
NE but counting up -- 50, 9, 100, 150 and the arrow or the pointer hasn't
moved. Even after a sloooooooooooooooooooooow turn around under clear
skies -- STILL northeast. So now it's pointing the direct opposite side of
the trail/ street. There may be a bit of fluctuation or movement but it
could then take about 4 minutes to finally swing around or blink and correct
itself. Is this what you've seen when the compass gets turned off?
I always look at is these "toys" are much to expensive to not have them
working perfectly!
