[GeoStL] Re: Advice requested

- Hey, I agree this is just a fun activity. I ain't wound too tight. That is just the way I think. But I also think that no matter what I say it isn't going to mean a hill of beans to the other guy. It is his own conscience that is going to drive whether he feels he is right or wrong. However, my comment regarding "moral relativism" was really meant to indicate that there is a right and wrong, and regardless of what someone's opinion is on that, it doesn't make something wrong into something right.

Your list of examples of moral relativism is not IMHO examples of moral relativism at all. It is a schedule of punishment to fit the degree of wrong done, not a modification of what is right and wrong. All the crimes listed are wrong. It is only when you start playing around in other areas making something wrong for one person and it magically becomes OK for someone else that you start getting into the issue of moral relativism. I hesitate to elaborate any further or this could turn into a very political or religious discussion, and that would be a bit too off the topic for this forum.

The "needs to learn" point is exactly about the phrase you used about being "wound too tight". A DNF because a cache is missing is part of the game just like not catching a fish is part of fishing. It is a given, and is part of "life". If someone is "wound so tight" that they NEED to claim a find when they did not find it is perhaps something that is a problem and they need to learn to just let it go rather than go through what appears to be mental anguish over it. I would like to see someone like that not NEED to claim it as a find and have a tremendous amount of fun in just doing things like this and not even worry about counting it or not. I just think they will feel better in the long run.

I mentioned my son in my original post, and what I tell him is that life is NOT fair, so don't get upset when you get the short end of the stick. Learn to laugh at yourself and don't take unfairness to you seriously or personally. It will certainly make your quality of life poorer of you do. But the unfairness of others or circumstances does not give you leave to waiver in your integrity. You have to stick to your morals even if it seems like the bad guys are getting ahead and the good guys are losing. I am hoping this advice will help him not be "wound too tight".

Thanks for your thoughts on what I said. Sometimes it is hard to tell whether I have expressed myself adequately or not in this medium, and it does look like I missed the mark a bit.. If you or anyone else want to chat about this offline, I would not mind that a bit. I might learn something.

Moral relativism just doesn't work no matter what is at stake.
The guy needs to learn to deal with reality and put this in perspective.

Moral relativism?!?! Whew....Now there's some high falootin' feelosophy for
a casual (hopefully fun) activity.

MO state law recognizes 'Murder: First Degree', 'Murder: Second
Degree'....'Manslaughter: Voluntary', 'Manslaughter:
Involuntary'......'Theft: Petty', 'Theft: Grand'.....to name just a few
cases of 'moral relativism'.

But MO geocachers can't give a grumpy, broke down old fart from Minnesota
with braces on both knees and trying to climb a not insignificant number of
steps a little slack in a cache log because he 'needs to learn......'.(???)

Wow, why does the phrase 'Wound TOO tight' come to mind.
