Dear colleagues,
I’m looking for participants to test-drive my latest online course
introducing the basics of distance sampling and analysis using R. Please
forward this notice to your professional networks by Monday 24th October to
allow time for people to apply. Thank you.
This 5 week online course will run from Tuesday 8th November to Monday 12th
December
*Deadline* for applications: *Monday 31st October*, midnight GMT
Successful applicants notified on: Thursday 3rd November
*Learning objectives*: After completing this short course, you will be able
to:
- Describe the theory behind distance sampling
- Identify uses for distance sampling in your own wildlife
conservation work
- Run distance sampling models in R to calculate animal densities
from line transect surveys
- Interpret the results using information theory (AIC values)
*Study mode*: You can study from anywhere in the world, provided you have a
reliable internet connection and can commit 8-10 hours per week to the
reading, online discussions, computer-based exercises and group work.
Within each week, the timing of your study is flexible – you can choose
when to study, provided you complete the exercises and are involved in the
group work for that week. Places are limited to 25 participants to allow
for individual support and feedback by the tutor.
The course is free and in return you commit to studying the weekly topics,
and providing me with feedback on how useful and engaging the learning
materials are, and where they could be improved.
This opportunity is available to conservation professionals and students
working in bio-diverse countries, with first-hand experience of fieldwork
and conservation issues. You can be at any stage in your career but
priority will be given to early-career professionals and graduate students
who are active in conservation within their own country, and who have had
limited opportunity to study at overseas academic institutions.
*Pre-requisites*: No prior knowledge of distance sampling is required, but
ideally you will have field experience of surveying line transects. You
must have basic competence in R, including how to:
1. Import data into R,
2. Create R objects: vectors and data.frames,
3. View R objects: data.frames, vectors and lists/parts of lists,
4. Subset objects using square parentheses [],
5. Create simple plots.
*How to apply*: If you are interested, please email me at
lucy.tallents@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with a brief description (1 short paragraph)
of your current role in wildlife conservation and how you would use the
skills you acquire to benefit conservation. Attachments will not be read.
Demand is likely to be high so I will not be able to respond to every
application/query – successful applicants will be informed by 5pm GMT on
Thursday 3rd November.
This is a great chance to boost your career skills at no financial cost,
using learning materials usually only available to students and staff at
the University of Oxford’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit!
