That would mean my Eizo F980 is a hobbyist monitor when I'm playing
games, and a high end professional monitor when I hack work related
code...? ;-)
Oh, and to get back to Linux; I use it for playing Q3A, RTCW and
whatnot, as well as for hacking personal and work related stuff.
Linux + a real time kernel will also run our next generation of
instruments.
Frankly, considering all areas where Linux is seriously usable, I'd
say Linux is *more* professional than pretty much any other platform,
and in particular anything MS has to offer.
Just a few hints:
* Where's MS's hard real time support?
* Can I hack the kernel to implement hard RT support,
adjust scheduler behavior and that kind of things?
* Can I strip off drivers and stuff I don't need,
*without massive reverse engineering?
(Note: Reverse engineering is illegal, according to the EULA.)
Right; people *are* using Windows (NT + RTK mostly) in RT systems, but
the performance is mediocre. Windows is *definitely* in the "hobby
OS" league in this area - although the prices of RTKs try to sugest
otherwise.
