I used the word hobby for lack of a better term, thats why i quoted it
with ""'s. When i say hobby, i dont mean the "amature crappy not enough
time or money to do it right" side of it, i mean the "unemcumbered by
coporate whims, so it gets written the way it should be, by enthusiasts
who know what they are doing" side of it.

I certainly use linux as a hobby OS, i play with it because its
interesting, and allows me to do interesting things with it. Windows on
the other hand is merely a portal to my other hobby, playing games :)

There must be a better term for it, but most of linux was written by
enthusiasts as their hobby. So which thing defines what linux (and the
rest of it, toolchain etc...) is. The usage, or the intentions of the
creators?

I'd like to think its the intention of the creators, for no other reason
other than its kinda romantic (in the classical sense). It sort of gives
them credit i suppose.

I think this is like the difference between amature and professional.
The word professional belies a sort of prowess over the dicipline,
amature has come to mean that the participant is a bit of a lame arse.
The olympics have shown the opposite, none of the athletes were paid to
be there (as far as i know) and most (at least some) are not
professional athletes when they are not at the olympics. Doesnt mean the
amature is worse, just look at the basketball* :)

(*I know nothing about basketball, except the fact that the USA team was
beaten, and that team was made up of professionals (admittedly playing a
different basketball than they are used to))
