If you're looking to buy a professional 3D modeling tool, I'd personally
recommend SoftImageXSI.
It's cheaper than the others, and twice as good. Also, it looks to be taking
over the market for game modeling. For a test, you can get the Experience
version (which is the full version of SoftImage but with a 5000 polygon
limit per model) from FilePlanet.com.
SoftImage is an absolutely AMAZING modeling program. It also supports many
scripting languages such as VBScript, JScript, Perl, and C/C++ for the
scripting engine. THE COOLEST bit about SoftImage is that you can create a
full skeleton that has kinetics on it through 2 (and I mean 2!) mouse
clicks!
But, GMax is also a good choice. It just doesn't have the power of
SoftImageXSI.

How about saving yourself some money and using GMax.
"gmax is a free 3D modeling and animation tool based on Discreet's
award-winning 3ds max®. Built for gamers to create their own in-game
content for gmax ready games, a gamer can produce everything from
characters and vehicles to landscapes and props. Not only do you get to
customize your games with gmax, you also learn 3D design within a
professional-level tool."
I think that sounds a little more like what you are looking for. Then if
you like it you can always get 3ds max.
I'm not an artist and haven't used either of these products and am relying
totally on what I have read to base my decision. I'm sure there are people
who will know better than me around here, but GMax looked like quite a
good learning tool to me.
