Hi,
when OpenGL was made available outside Irix, it wasn't tied
to any windowing system. Due to the desired portability of
OpenGL no one at the time specified a Windowing toolkit for
OpenGL.
GLUT was a way to create a simple window that was OpenGL enabled
and portable across systems with minimal functionality.
It doesn't have anything to do with 3D graphics as such.
But it quite old nowadays and you don't want to use besides playing
around with OpenGL.
SDL is a better library, since it is a multimedia one and provides
much more functionality.
Cheers,
Paulo
