in defense of java (i usually dont defend it!) John Carmack at ID software
contemplated using java for quake zero (ie the quake 3 game you run in your
browser).
Java can do OpenGL and can do some pretty amazing things

(to use my app, click on the screen after it loads. Right click toggles
