Well you aren't doing anything wrong.
I would suggest uninstalling and redownloading visual studio express. There is 
obviously something wrong with it.

Ok here is exactly what I do:

New project- win32 console

then the wizard pops up, and I do next and then check empty project

Next I do new- file

then click .cpp file, and type away

And i tried building it, it gave me the same error.
