I can think of 2 reasons:
1. Possible booming economy. Rising tide floats all boats. Although
not stemming the off shoring trend, if economic conditions improve it
could lead to an increase in the need for jobs here, as well as there.
2. Technical Innovation. If there is a significant technical
breakthrough here it could take some time before there is the
technical expertise there to replace a job here.
I like to think I am working on one such technical innovation, but of
course it is just fantasy until it is done.
Another idea is to start your own business. Work for yourself. That
way wondering how to get someone else to hire you is no longer a
problem. Of course, it does give you a different problem set. C'est la
Vie!
I work as a sys admin, because at this time I do not know of anyone
that wants to pay for what I want to program, and to me the fun in
programming is programming what you want to program, not what someone
else wants you to program.
Actually, programming is only mildly interesting. What I really like
is creating things. My dream job would be to have my own company and
have the best 6 programmers in the world work for me. :)
Which brings up another point. Studies have shown that a small team of
expert programmers is superior to a large team of mediocre
programmers. To me this tells me that that out sourcing is a way to
produce mediocre software, and that if you are very good at what you
do, there will always be a place for you no matter where you live.
So if you follow what inspires you, you will have the best chance to
be world class at it and the best chance to not be bounced around be
the economic storm.
My $0.02,
Chris
