Thanks for sharing your toughts with us Bob.
I'm 35 now so I've been on the job market for awhile to. Specialy if you 
consider that I started to work as an apprentice at age of 14 :)
BTW, I'm Brazilian and this is quite common here.
I've worked primarily in the heavy industty like steel and oil and them 
I migrated to computer networks and software developmment. I was in USA 
during the dotcom bouble and was fortunate to get out before the burst.
One thing that I learned on those years is that sometimes is better to 
be very good in a niche. The field avaliable is smaller but usualy you 
don't have much competition.
Another good advice is been noted, have your name recognized. Free 
software projects, lectures, voluntary work are good ways to do it.
