[gameprogrammer] Re: crunch time

Looking at my brother's job, he doesn't work in the industry but
rather is a laborer as a local plant. He's union and has a pretty
sweet contract. Anyway...

His...
... Normal hours = Normal Pay.
... Overtime hours = Normal Pay for the first hour.
= 1.5 X Normal Pay for some hours after that.
= 2 X Normal Pay for every hour after that.
... Holiday Hours = 2 X Normal Pay.
... Holiday OverTime Hours = 3 X Normal Pay.

Also if he is asked to work OverTime for more than 4 hours the
company needs to provide 2 meals. This is because they have
prevented you from doing regular life tasks (like shopping and
cooking your own meals or what ever chores you need to do.) If they
have a 'crunch time' then they have to provide meals for the entire
time they ask you to work over time which includes lunch and dinner.
Also after a crunch situation, which usually only last 1 or at most 2
weeks he usually gets 2 personal days.

It's a shame that a union had to make a company be honest but all
that seems a hell of a lot more fair than what the original poster
(OP) was asked to do. If the OP isn't in a position to really
require the job then don't make too many waves. But I would consult
a lawyer. I suspect you are allowed to refuse to work overtime, no
company can 'mandate' that; But they'll probably fire you, and trying
to prove wrongful dismissal because you wouldn't work overtime will
probably not net you a whole lot.

All in all I think the OP part of a company that would really suck to
work for. Overtime work, even a few hours past 40 will start to
cause burn out quickly. Hell, I would even argue that the normal 40
hour work week is a bit much sometimes but my boss wouldn't agree to that.
