Hi Stephen,
Just on this point, we use virtualPC to do this - creates a emulated full PC
in a window on your machine that you can specify has network access to its
host PC. I don't know how much it costs, but it's a standard part of MSDN
subscription, if this helps. If you can't afford that, before m$oft bought
virtualPC, it was called 'connectix virtualPC' - you might be able to find a
copy of the older software if you dig about a bit.
