[gameprogrammer] Re: Software Development Kits

As I understand it XNA is a managed framework similar to DirectX.. Managed DirectX 2.0 has been cancelled and rolled into XNA. XNA is still quite low level, and nothing like click and create.
Im not sure if XNA supports native code development.

3DSMax is a powerful tool, but generally out of price range. there is a gmax version for mod development though that might be worth checking out.

I am using Milkshape3D in my project at the moment, but it is a bit limited (it is cheap though).
Torque is quite good these days, but you spend a lot of time scripting.
The tools you pick really depend on the task, how many people you have and what skills they have, budget, time..

Hello GameProgrammers,

I thought I would start a topic discussion on development tools.  With the new XNA development download out by Microsoft, suggesting hobbyist and individuals to create video games on their own.  If the games are good (based on popularity) then it is possible other gamers can download the game on the XBOX-360.  Is this another Click-and-create-a-game software that teaches people you don't have to learn any programming to create crappy games or is this an actual tool that Microsoft is providing for free?  Likewise on this topic, what development kits are popular and valuable tools in creating games of today?  What tools do you like to use in creating your games?  For 3D Modeling I heard 3D Studio Max was a powerful tool, what do you think?

Thanks for the thoughts,
Draven
