Dont forget Crystal Space as a game engine, but it's not newbie
oriented at all. However it's probably one of the best open source
engine.

PS: I am not involved in it and I don't use it :)

well, IMHO Ogre3D is NOT the easiest newbie engine, quite the opposite -- very hard to get started, more than a days worth of installation/configuration.

 easier is Irrlicht, it is quite featurerich too but not THAT feature rich,
and really simple to get started. i was rendering my first "cube" within an
hour ...
