Hi,
I'm a C++ very experienced programmer and I always wanted to make some
really good commercial games. I thought about using some IDE because it
could make my work easier.
Do you think it would be better for me work with some library? I saw a few
articles about game programming with Visual C++ (including 3D games). Can
you tell me if there is a good book for me? I read about "Game Programming
Gems" Series, what do you think?
About money, 3D Toque Engine and Tools are about $2000.00 - it wouldn't be a
problem. But I don't have a million :-)
Thanks a lot.
Dirso

the first simcity was 2D. The simcity 2 is probably more 2.5D than 3D as it
has terrain with multiple levels of height, but you dont really fly around
inside it.
Newer simcities would be 3D with a restricted camera. you can zoom in and
out and rotate around.
(although its been awhile since i saw it, maybe im wrong here)
Normally games are developed by experienced computer programmers and
artists, however there are some toolkits available that make game
development more accessible to people who are not familiar with programming.
These toolkits are good for prototyping ideas but it would be rare that
commercial quality game was developed with them.
Perhaps someone on the list can recommend some
Game maker and the torque 2d game engine spring to mind. There are probably
much better ones around for the sort of simcity isometric view
What is your experience? (perhaps you are a programmer who wants to know
about some libraries?)
What tools have you looked at?
What is your budget (some cost money)
thanks,
Josh

Hi, Guys!
I have a few questions about game programming and I hope you can help me:
1) Games like SimCity is 2D or 3D?
2) What is the best environment to develop this kind of games?
3) What is the best environment to develop games that allows the players to
download extensions from the web (exactly like the maps from SimCity, or new
monsters and levels like other games do)
Thank you very much,
Dirso.
