This is far afield and we should wind this up...
I was in grade school at the time living in an area that was out of
reach of the Soviet missiles in Cuba, but easily in reach for their
ICBMs. I think of that times as the "growing up" period. Not the sane
period. The sane period didn't get started for at least 10 years after
that. When the US finally figured out that we couldn't kill them so we
had to compete in other ways.
We are still learning, but the fact that nuclear weapons have only been
used twice says something very positive about the human species. Sadly,
I feel that they had to be used before anyone could conceive of how
horrible they are. Sort of like teaching a child not to touch fire. I
have two children, one could be taught not to touch the fire, the other
had to touch the fire...

I really hope that doesn't happen. I hate to imagine how many people
would be killed before the US regained its sanity.
