There are of course many flavors of democracy. Republican and parliamentary
systems are both attempts to moderate the worst excesses of pure democracy.
A recent wannabe pol in Canada advanced the plank that our gubbermint
should rule by plebicite. Now that's pure democracy - every issue goes to
all the people. His name was Stockwell Day, leader of the Reform Party. He
was warned by wiser heads, but he confirmed on the record that in _his_
gubbermint any issue could be brought to national plebicite, by a petition
signed by enuf citizens.

So someone started an e-petition, "The undersigned citizens of Canada vote
that the leader of the Reform Party should have his first name changed to
'Doris'." The petition caught on like wildfire, easily passed 700,000 names
(in a country of 35,000,000). He was last heard from, singing "Que sera,
sera" to the press corps, on his campaign plane.

Heh - he had already proposed calling his movement the Canadian Reform
Alliance Party, until someone pointed out what a great acronym it made.
Looks like Darwin missed a few...

>Capitalism is superior because it provides the most goods to the most
people (it rewards efficiency).

This is only true if capitalism's engine is not subject to interference.
Both governments and monopolies interfere for their own goals, and need to
be curbed, else capitalism will fail. Like democracy, capitalism needs some
sober defense from its own excesses.
