Yeah, people were getting usable performance out of GDI and directX when
they couldn't get OpenGL to do much of anything. Of course, they were
not getting *good* performance. But, it was what you expect from low
end/old video chip sets.

Me either. But, I am hardly a good example. I generally build all my own
machines and hand pick each component. I am clearly not a typical
consumer.
