It's also easier to filter spam at the mailserver level if the filtering
system uses global information.  With a degree of intelligence, it can
tell when a message is sent identically to 40% of addresses and bounces
from 20% more non-existent and is therefore probably spam.

I think the spam filtering at www.fastmail.fm works like this. 
Certainly, I get very little spam at this account.
