By botnets are you talking about zombie smtp servers?  I've been
getting
a slew of complaints from Spamcop about workstations on one particular
subnet.  Unfortunately, because too many network based activities go
on
in the labs, we don't shut things down at the firewall on the
educational side,
just the administrative network.  The educational people depend, 
apparently, on a program called Deep Freeze to abort any additional
programs
when the workstation is rebooted.  Seems to be working.... NOT!
