Hi,
AO> No, you are right. That's why companies like Mandrake, Lindows,
AO> Conectiva, etc are focusing in user friendly distros. They do work out
AO> of the box.
Yes, but still with a choice of windows managers.
AO> Agreed. It's a problem to be moved from your "confort zone" but when one
AO> finds out that one can have a more robust, more secure system for a
AO> fraction of the price, I think it's a good push on that direction.
Not for 99.9% of users who just want to be able to use the
applications/games. The problem is lack of apps, games and customer
awareness for Linux.
AO> Actually, I was very unfortunate with this example. I should have asked
AO> for something like "deleting all the files with "abc" in any part of the
AO> name" :)
You're being ridiculous. Since '95, you've had extended wildcards so
to trash your example, you do this:
del *abc*
For your previous examples:
del *.txt
or
move *.txt <directory>
Of course, you have to do it from a command prompt but given you were
arguing about user-friendly environments, you need a shell open in
Linux too thus rendering your argument invalid.
AO> As I said, to the common user, it's just a matter of stay in a confort
AO> zone but I believe that this is changing quite fast.
Not at all, it's all to do with support. If the programs that people
see in shops don't run in Linux, why would they want Linux? It's the
minority of people who run Linux at home - and, no matter what you
might like to believe, Linux is not aimed at home users. Period. You
may argue that companies like Slackware, Red Hat et al are improving
this, but no, they are not - they provide apps but they don't control
the OS itself - they can only give you options. And given that some
distros can't handle packages from other distros, it's destroying the
Linux community anyway by fracturing it up. Once there's a main distro
then perhaps you'll get more and more users - but until that point you
won't.
Anyway, we're well off-topic here, but I can't stand to hear
mis-informed slating of any OS. Use Linux if you like it, fine, but
don't make false comments. There's hardly anything that you can do in
one and not the other - and nearly all shell tools like grep are
available for Windows; though not, admittedly, on the CD itself.
Still, given Linux is just a Kernel, I can argue that they don't come
with Linux either. ;)
And getting back to Grant's original enquiry, he may find FileMon
(http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml) useful - it
shows all file accesses. Take a look at their other tools, RegMon is
also incredibly useful. Finally, Pest Patrol
(http://www.pestpatrol.com/) is currently the best spyware/adware/trojan
remover. It even uses Heuristics and will identify things that _may_
be dubious. It is, however, not free... You may try the free online
scanner (http://www.pestscan.com/) to see what it finds...
Neil.
