[gameprogrammer] Re: New to Game Programming ......

Heres a bit of non-game related advice. Calm down, your writing style suggests that you panicking. Use the words 'you', 'your', 'see', 'thanks' and 'problem'. Your not emailing this list on a cell phone key pad, you have the whole alphabet available to you on that keyboard. Dont be afraid to break up your train of thought into more than one sentence, using full stops ('.') and capital letters. Yes, I know, this isn't an english class, and we are not going to mark you on your posts. I must be the worst speller ever. Its just a lot easier to read, and understand, when you use sentences, punctuation and correct english.

Now on to game related advice. In my opinion, just learn all this stuff as you go.
Learn some C, get good enough at SDL so your at the point where you can place a pixel of any colour, anywhere in the rendering window that SDL provides, write a simple ray tracer. This will give you an appreciation of the class of problems graphics engines need to over come.
Write tetris. This will give you a fairly complete appreciation of the class of problems games needs to solve.
You will soon find out what you need to learn by completeing excersises similer to the ones above. A book wont give you the answers, it can only guide you to the questions you need to ask. A problem isnt solved if you find the solution in a book, its only truely solved if you yourself discover the solution.
Please note that I am not saying the books are worthless. You don't become a good programmer by reading books, but good programmers should have volumes of text at hand (which is easyer now with the internet).
Also, you dont need to be a good programmer to write games, you can be an average programmer with enough drive and a good vision :)

Named after its country of origin 'England', English is a little known dialect
used by up to 1.5 billion non-Americans worldwide. Some interesting but
obviously incorrect features of the language include:

- queues of people
- wonderful coloUrs
- the useful metal aluminIum
- the exotic herbs (h-urbs), basil (ba-zil) and oregano (o-re-gaa-no)
- specialiSed books called 'dictionaries' that tell you how to spell words
correctly

Many people using this bizarre gutter speak also subscribe to the pagan belief
that water freezes at 0 degrees and that distances should be measured in the
forbidden mathematical system of base-10...
