[gameprogrammer] Re: New to Game Programming ......

Hi,
I recently started game programming so my perspective might be of help to you. First of all, starting in C/C++ will be a little harder than if you started with something like basic to get your head around the programming side of things, however it's not necessary.
So the first thing you need is a C/C++ primer. Look for something like getting started with c++, or teach yourself c++. Those sort of books will get you on the right track. Once you have read one of those, you'll understand basic programming concepts, and you'll be ready to go on to something more advanced. I would recommend getting a more advanced book on c++, one which shows you how to use the advanced features of c++ (I'm not really sure of a title here, maybe stroustrup's book), a basic game programming book (if you are programming on windows, tricks of the game programming guru's is great), a book on program design (no idea), and the book Code Complete, which is a complete guide to code construction (how to format code to be readable, and easy to modify). Once you are at this stage, start writing simple games, start with 2d games because its easier and the principles learned are the backbone of 3d programming. Once you are proficient at that level, the sky is the limit.
While you are learning programming, you should learn maths completely, as there is not a single area of maths that I haven't found usefull in some area. If you have already finished school, then do a course in it (TAFE in Australia, I'm not sure what is available in India). I'd say you would need to be at least year 12 level (Australian again, but basically able to enter university in a math based course). Once you have the basics down, Beginning Math and Physics for Game Programmers is good. It isn't designed for real begginers, you won't be able to be able to understand it until you've done at least algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
From there get as much material as you can, on both maths and programming.
