[gameprogrammer] Re: New to Game Programming ......

Hi,

I haven't been following this thread so don't know what other people have recommended to you. I just glanced at your last mail and noticed the book title, and thought I'd save you a few dollars/euros/rupees or whatever.

There is an awful lot to learn if you are producing games on your own. It also depends on the type of game you will be making. In my case I'm writing a fantasy RPG. I've had to learn about 3D modelling, level design, the API for the game engine I'm using, maths for distance and direction checking, collision detection, physics...on and on.

I've been programming for many years, so all the basic stuff is already well entrenched in my head and OOP is second nature. Therefore I'm not the person to tell you where to start, as a lot of stuff is just there and I don't even realise I know it any more, it's just part of life.

There's a useful little book in the same series you were talking about. It's called Beginning Game level Design. It's got some helpful psychology and level design tips to keep your players interested and wanting more.

In general I've found that once you know the generic "input/logic/update-screen" cycle then you are better off buying specialist books for the area you are currently learning about, rather than buying generic "game programming" books. So get a good 3D modelling book, or a good level design book, or a good OpenGL book or whatever. And learn OOP and design patterns really well if you have a large game and want to be able to support it without some real heartache.

Just my tuppence-worth. Everyone will have their own ideas. We all work and learn in different ways.

All the best,

Troll.
